Capture Environment Selection

Overview

Capture supports two user interface environments for the review experience. Each template can be configured to use either:

  • Legacy Capture Environment - Original interface
  • Modern Capture Environment - Improved interface (recommended)

Overview

The Modern environment is the current, actively developed interface with ongoing improvements and new features.

Key Features

  • Improved Performance - Faster loading and rendering
  • Better Markup Tools - Enhanced annotation capabilities
  • Workflow Integration - Tighter integration with MinuteView workflows
  • Responsive Design - Better experience across device sizes
  • Regular Updates - Ongoing feature additions and improvements
  • Long-Term Support - Focus of all future development

Visual Experience

  • Clean, modern interface design
  • Intuitive navigation
  • Improved artifact viewing
  • Better organization of capture details
  • Enhanced timeline view

When to Use

Use Modern environment for:

  • All new templates
  • Templates without specific legacy requirements
  • Best user experience
  • Access to latest features
  • Long-term maintainability

Legacy Capture Environment

Overview

The original Capture interface, maintained for compatibility with older implementations.

Key Features

  • Compatibility - Works with older system configurations
  • Familiarity - Existing users know the interface
  • Stable - No significant changes planned
  • Proven - Tested in production for years

Limitations

  • Minimal Updates - Not receiving new features
  • Older UI Patterns - Less modern interface design
  • Limited Integration - Fewer integration capabilities with newer MinuteView features

When to Use

⚠️ Only use Legacy environment when:

  • Specific compatibility requirements exist
  • Users are trained on legacy interface and change would cause issues
  • Technical limitations prevent using Modern environment
  • Specific features only available in legacy (rare)

Configuring Environment Selection

In Template Settings

  1. Open the Capture Template in Console
  2. Find Capture Environment setting
  3. Select:
    • Modern Capture Environment (recommended)
    • Legacy Capture Environment
  4. Save template configuration

Per-Template Configuration

Each template can use a different environment:

  • Modern templates for new processes
  • Legacy templates for older processes (if needed)
  • Mix and match based on requirements

Migration Strategy

From Legacy to Modern

If you have existing templates using Legacy environment:

Assessment Phase

  1. Review current usage - How is legacy environment being used?
  2. Identify dependencies - Any specific legacy features required?
  3. User feedback - Would Modern environment improve experience?

Planning Phase

  1. Create test template - Duplicate template, change to Modern
  2. Test functionality - Verify all features work correctly
  3. User testing - Have users test Modern interface
  4. Document changes - Note any workflow differences

Migration Phase

  1. Train users - Familiarize with Modern interface
  2. Update template - Change environment setting
  3. Monitor usage - Watch for issues after switch
  4. Gather feedback - Continuous improvement

Rollback Plan

  • Keep Legacy option available during transition
  • Can revert if issues arise
  • Document any blockers encountered

User Experience Differences

Creating Captures

Modern:

  • Streamlined creation flow
  • Better field organization
  • Improved artifact selection
  • Clearer validation messages

Legacy:

  • Traditional form interface
  • Basic field display
  • Standard artifact picker
  • Simple validation

Reviewing Captures

Modern:

  • Enhanced artifact viewer
  • Better markup tools
  • Improved timeline display
  • Cleaner action buttons

Legacy:

  • Classic artifact viewer
  • Basic markup tools
  • Standard timeline
  • Traditional buttons

Markup and Annotation

Modern:

  • More markup tool options
  • Better color selection
  • Easier text annotation
  • Improved eraser/undo
  • Better touch support

Legacy:

  • Basic markup shapes
  • Limited colors
  • Simple text tool
  • Standard eraser
  • Mouse-focused

Technical Considerations

Browser Support

Modern Environment:

  • Chrome (recommended)
  • Edge
  • Firefox
  • Safari (with limitations)
  • Requires modern browser versions

Legacy Environment:

  • Broader older browser support
  • IE11 compatibility (if needed)
  • More forgiving of outdated browsers

Network Requirements

Modern Environment:

  • Optimized for modern networks
  • Better caching
  • Reduced data transfer

Legacy Environment:

  • Works on slower connections
  • Less optimization
  • More data transfer

Server Requirements

Modern Environment:

  • Leverages current MinuteView capabilities
  • Better performance on current hardware

Legacy Environment:

  • Minimal server requirements
  • Works on older MinuteView versions

Best Practices

For New Implementations

Always choose Modern Capture Environment:

  • Best experience for new users
  • Access to latest features
  • Long-term support guaranteed
  • Better integration capabilities

For Existing Implementations

Evaluate each template:

  • Is there a specific reason to stay on Legacy?
  • Would users benefit from Modern environment?
  • Plan gradual migration if appropriate

For Mixed Environments

It's acceptable to have:

  • Mostly Modern templates
  • Few Legacy templates for specific needs
  • Plan to eventually consolidate to Modern

Common Questions

Can I change environment after captures exist?

Yes, but:

  • Existing captures remain in original environment
  • New captures use new environment
  • Consider user communication
  • Test before changing production templates

Will Legacy environment be removed?

  • No immediate plans for removal
  • Maintained for compatibility
  • Modern is focus of development
  • Eventually Legacy may be deprecated (with notice)

Can users choose their environment?

No - Environment is set per template, not per user:

  • Ensures consistent experience
  • Simplifies administration
  • Reduces confusion

What if Modern environment doesn't work for us?

  • Contact MinuteView support
  • Describe specific issues or requirements
  • May be configuration solution
  • Legacy remains available if needed
